Jiggered Ceilidh Band Review of 2011

Jiggered Ceilidh Band Review of 2011

Another vintage year for one of Scotland's most popular ceilidh bands: Jiggered Ceilidh Band. We have performed at more gigs in 2011 than ever (averaging more than one a week). More than half of these were weddings and we've been delighted by the feedback from the brides and grooms!

2012 will see the 10th Anniversary of Jiggered and promises to be another amazing adventure. With lots of confirmed bookings for 2012 and 2013, please get in touch soon if you want to guarantee we can play for you!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band on Dundee's HMS Frigate Unicorn

Jiggered Ceilidh Band on Dundee's HMS Frigate Unicorn

This was a memorable ceilidh for a number of reasons! Jeremy had booked Jiggered Ceilidh Band for his 50th birthday party and the venue was unique: aboard the HMS Frigate Unicorn, Dundee. Having arrived (pretty much) on time we walked up the gangway onto the ship. There were lots of signs warning "mind your head"...at my height I didn't have to worry too much although the toilet door required a duck even for me!

Getting the sound equipment and drums up to the main deck involved climbing some stairs that were as steep as a set of ladders and busy with guests so when we were leaving at the end of the night we used an insanely steep gangway directly from the top deck to the street (almost lost a bass drum into the Victoria Dock!).

There were loads of really interesting features around the Unicorn that made it a fascinating visit [the health and safety announcement was another highlight...but that's a blog for another day!]

...we played in a section that had hooks at four corners which were used to transform it into a boxing ring (very appropriate when Jenny and Chris almost had a scrap!).

...there were cannons all over the place and the original Helm which faced the words "Fear God, honour the king" was cool.

...the deck was bevelled and warped but had loads of character (and almost had a guitar smashed on it when Jenny was attacked by a massive fly during a song, much to Ewan's amusement).

...the ship's bell was right behind us. Susan noticed that it was tuned to "A" and so in the middle of the Virginia Reel I would run from piano to bell at the most dramatic points to sound the bell.

The birthday boy and his wife seemed really pleased with the job we did, the dance floor was filled all night and we had a brilliant time as you can probably tell from this longer-than-usual blog!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band and Michelle McManus do gig at Crowne Plaza

Jiggered Ceilidh Band and Michelle McManus do gig at Crowne Plaza

Jiggered Ceilidh Band were at the Crowne Plaza for the second time in a week- this time it was the Gala Ball for a charity who we've played for before. Glasgow Sands are a charity who support families who have suffered a stillbirth or neonatal death. It is a really worthwhile cause of course and on the night Michelle McManus came along to sing a few songs before the meal- she used our PA and was on fine form. Comedian Des McLean then did a short routine before hosting the auction. After that, Jiggered finished off the night with some ceilidh tunes!

Thoroughly enjoyed the evening- thousands of pounds raised for an excellent charity.

2010 Review

2010 Review

Jiggered Ceilidh Band have had their most successful year ever. In fact, resident Maths geek Chris has been looking at how things have been shaping up for Jiggered over recent years and the trend is very satisfying! We'll maybe beat the 50-gig barrier (52 would average 1 a week so let's make that the target!). With lots of events confirmed already, 2011 looks like being a fantastic one for Scotland's top ceilidh band!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band's "Hogmanay Bells Slot" Still Available!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band's "Hogmanay Bells Slot" Still Available!

Hogmanay is the evening of the year which we are in greatest demand...so much so that we arrange our evening in "slots" (early Hogmanay: 7pm-10pm and through the bells: 11pm-2am). We've already booked up the early Hogmanay slot to a church in Glasgow.

If you are interested in the "through the bells" slot, we would come to set up our sound equipment earlier in the day, go back to Glasgow and return in time for an 11pm start at your event. So we can only accept clients who are within about 30 minutes drive of Glasgow.

We have had other enquiries about this slot already and we had to turn away lots of potential clients once we were booked up for 2009, so if you would like to have us play the through the bells slot please get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Look forward to hearing from you by email (jiggered@hotmail.com) or by phone (07793886607).

Scotland's Jiggered Ceilidh Band on Wedding Show

Scotland's Jiggered Ceilidh Band on Wedding Show

Jiggered Ceilidh Band have been approached by ITV about possibly appearing on the latest series of Four Weddings on Living. The show basically allows 4 brides to attend and then rate (*cringe*) various aspects of each other's weddings. Sounds like a potential bloodbath! "I rate your dress 3 out of 10", "your groom's speech was no more than a 2 out of 10"...Anyway, watch this space for more info!

In the meantime, I came across a website that allows you to get yourself ceilidh-dancing on the world wide web (aptly called the World Wide Ceilidh). Upload a photo of you and your dance partner and then get started!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band Brave the Snow for Hogmanay

Jiggered Ceilidh Band Brave the Snow for Hogmanay

In the final ceilidh of 2009, Jiggered Ceilidh Band travelled to Cumbernauld through lots of snow to play our Hogmanay gig at Craighalbert (great to be back with our friends and fans there). The end of the gig saw lots of car-pushing as the temperature was MINUS EIGHT and the snow was thick.

Ewan brought his antipodean pal Jaunty to the ceilidh. It was Jaunty's first ceilidh and he loved it but said it had a lot of similarities to bush dances in Australia (we're considering changing our name to Jiggered Bush Band)! Jaunty asked us where the word "Hogmanay" came from. It seemed embarrassing that we didn't know but neither does Wikipedia which makes me feel slightly better!

Anyway, looking forward to more gigging in 2010!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band celebrate a great 2009

Jiggered Ceilidh Band celebrate a great 2009

Jiggered Ceilidh Band have had a phenomenal 2009. It's been our busiest year yet. Perhaps we should treat ourselves to a "Ceilidh Lager" by William Bros. It's on a shortlist of 15 beers in Sainsbury's 2009 Beer Competition!

During the epic year that was 2009:

-we launched our new website (thanks to the guys at Atomised for this- it's generating lots of business for us)
-we made a few important gear purchases (including a new mixer and our cool banner stands)
-we travelled to London for a gig (great roadtrip)
-we were asked to play in France (twice) and the USA (maybe in 2010)
-we introduced some new tunes (that have gone down well with our fans)

Anyway, I'm off to enjoy my Ceilidh Lager!!

Jenny: Jiggered Ceilidh Band's Die Hard Member

Jenny: Jiggered Ceilidh Band's Die Hard Member

It's official...Jenny is the most die-hard member of Jiggered Ceilidh Band. My wife is expecting our third child- she is being induced to deliver on Friday, so I will have to miss my 2nd ceilidh in 7 years. So Jenny moves into pole position, having missed only 1 ceilidh in Jiggered's history! Well done Jenny! Yipee-ki-yay!!!

Once in a Lifetime Offer- take advantage of Ewan's misfortune!

Once in a Lifetime Offer- take advantage of Ewan's misfortune!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band drummer Ewan has had a nightmare week: First, his 15-year-old family dog Josh died. Then he was made redundant. Finally, he was taken into hospital (he's not been well...his only functioning kidney has been playing up). *1,2,3.....awwww*

Now that Ewan is jobless, he is considering a change in career. He's thinking about starting up a drum tuition service. So, this is your opportunity to be one of the first to learn from our star drummer. If you are interested in snapping up one of his teaching slots, then you can contact him on 07746386025 (if you quote the reference number 3141 you can get a special Jiggered blog discount).

Happy drumming. And hope you have a better week this week Ewan!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band in Business with Rock n Roll Band

Jiggered Ceilidh Band in Business with Rock n Roll Band

Jiggered Ceilidh Band shed a tear as they sold their old sound system. It had served us well for the past few years but we decided to sell it on since we're now using Mackie powered speakers and a smaller mixer.

The gear was snapped up within a couple of hours by 3 guys from Greenock (it would have been sooner but they ignored the satnav instructions!!).

The trio are the members of The Licks, a fledgling rock and roll band based in Greenock. They seemed nice guys- we wish them all the best...hope our former sound stuff helps you out- we'll be looking out for the name! If you ever get famous, we'll be looking for some credit for getting you started!!

Jiggered Ceilidh Band:

Jiggered Ceilidh Band:

Wanting a "ceilidh band" for a wedding, 21st party, fundraiser, anniversary party, school prom, church event...? Jiggered Ceilidh Band have played at literally hundreds of events...and most of these bookings were from people who had heard us before. Our sound is quite distinctive: Susan is an excellent fiddler who is equally adept at sight-reading complicated pieces and playing by ear/improvising, Jenny has a fantastic singing voice and loads of clients and guests agree that her singing brings a unique quality to our ceilidh band (she can also play the guitar and knows most chords in the key of G)

Jiggered Ceilidh Band- NOT the Jiggers, Reelie Jiggered, JiggeryPokery....

Jiggered Ceilidh Band- NOT the Jiggers, Reelie Jiggered, JiggeryPokery....

Jiggered Ceilidh Band are NOT to be confused with "The Jiggers", "Reelie Jiggered Ceilidh Band", "Jiggery Pokery" or any other Jig-pun-related band. We've found out that a few people have booked another band thinking it was Jiggered Ceilidh Band they were getting only to get another ceilidh band (oops).

Jiggered's drummer Ewan has been off on his hols down in Australia -we will never hear the end of this if previous world tours are anything to go by ;)! Glad he's back...only 11 days until my wee sis Lorraine gets married and Jiggered are (of course) providing the ceilidh entertainment for that!

April Fools' Day

April Fools' Day

April Fools' Day is right up there with Christmas and birthdays for me. Love it.

The extent of my tom-foolery today was putting my left arm in a "stookie"... Took a bit of planning and effort but nothing like these classic and elaborate BBC April Fools' broadcasts from 1957 and 2008!
